Business Intelligence Use Case
Challenge
A Sypherlink client was plagued by inconsistent reporting across several lines of business units, and their users found it difficult to find a single version of the truth. Funding levels did not allow the client to build an enterprise data warehouse, so they chose to build line-of-business data marts concurrently. In order to get to the “single version of the truth,” a very important deliverable was to determine appropriate conformed dimensions, and the locations where the data for those conformed dimension tables could be accurately and reliably sourced.
Solution
Sypherlink Harvester was first used to reverse engineer candidate data sources. Data profiling was then performed on these data sources and dimensional mapping was completed in Harvester. The resulting mappings were then leveraged in Harvester Integrator to complete the ETL process, which was then used to populate the data marts.
Benefits
The data profiling and discovery capabilities of Harvester allowed this client to quickly determine the best sources of data in the enterprise. Harvester Integrator then allowed the client to quickly prototype and build production ETL needed for deploying each of their line-of-business data mart initiatives within time and budget. Satisfied end users were able to obtain consistent reporting which led to better decision making.
